What is Car Key Programming?

Car key programming is a service that has been needed since the compulsory introduction of Immobiliser systems fitted in vehicles from around 1998 in the UK. Some models since 1992 have also had Immobiliser systems fitted as standard before it was made compulsory in 1998. This means that even if you have a key blade that fits & turns in the ignition, the vehicle will not start until the key has actually been programmed to the vehicle. Likewise for the keyless entry & keyless start keys & fobs.

There are many methods to program car keys. Depending on the make, model & age of a vehicle. Some keys can be programmed via the OBD socket. Others may need a more in depth approach. So its important to remember when choosing someone to carry out any car key programming or car key cutting or car key coding on your vehicle, to always choose a competent auto locksmith who is not only capable of doing the job. But also will not damage your vehicle in the process or any of the modules on the vehicle such as ECUs. Body Control Modules, Immobiliser Units. Which should any of these be irreversibly damaged.
